SIGHT IS NOT LIMITED TO YOUR EYES,
LET YOUR HANDS GUIDE YOU AND NOT ONLY WILL YOU SEE HEAVEN YOU’LL FEEL IT
PROCESS
for a long time I’ve wanted to work with Braille but Didn’t know with
what Technique, after deliberating i choose to use weaving.
i had an idea of making a top using a treadle loom by weaving slits into the pice of fabric while weaving, making the slits circular when Stretched which would become my Braille. With this i made two digital sketches of what i wanted the top too look like one more technical and one showing the fit better. My finished Sketches for the top had braille text on the front running bottom to top and two slits on the back Piece. The braille text says:
“SIGHT OF TOUCH, HEAVEN YOU’LL SEE”
the reason for braille and the text, is that Details and texture doesn’t always have to be seen with your eyes to be enjoyed but can also be elevated by touch, so by feeling the garment the viewer notices not only the Techniques and Detailed work but also the figure and curves of the woman’s body and in a Sense sees heaven without using their eyes.
for the weaving i choose To use a Thin Wool yarn as my Warp and weft, so that the top would have more Stretch then the traditional cotton. i wanted the tops weave to be tight and easy on the eyes to ensure that the braille shows more. i chose plain weave as the pattern and With the yarn being 1 mm thick i did 10 threads per cm on a 80 cm wide weave which Came out to 800 threads warp of the weave (the length of the warp was around 3,2 m). Also chose to do plain weave since its quick and would work the best with my slit technuiqe.
While weaving i used one weft thread and did the Traditional back and forth weaving but when making a slit i stopped the weft on one side of the warp, then added another weft on the other side, in a way splitting the warp into two sections, Once i Had the two sides 1 cm long i connected the two sides again by cutting of one weft and using the other as the “main” weft to close the slit. and Continue weaving. with this Technique i was able to work fast by doing Three or four slits at the same time and having up to 5 Different weft threads.
