idea
As my Interest for metalsmithing and how mixing non textile materials with textiles can elevate a Garment more than just adding accents. i decided to work with chainmail and make it a major part of the garment.
for the garments visual themes i went for an evening/ event wear, while the materials and feel of the worn garment emulates a “Bio Armor”sensation
The Finished top was to be elegant and sleek While also having a mix of textures and Sheerness.
The top is made out of a dyed, dark Purple/ blue silk yoryu
black woven interfacing
5mm stainless steel rings and an Aluminum plate.
Adorned with a polyester hand dyed lilly.
process
I started with Sketching on body the Shape of where i wanted the Fabric and chainmail to meet.
while experimenting with fabric manipulation i also draped those tests on body too se what folds shapes and curves would feel right.
once i draped and pinned every fold manually instead of ruching on a machine, i sprayed the fabric with a mix of water and potato flower to stiffen the fabric and lock the folds in place.
After Carefully removing the outer body i draped woven Interfacing in one Piece by Spraying it with water and Stretching it.
i then placed the outer fabric on the interfacing and irond them together. then hand sewing all edges.
when the Main Body was done. i started experimenting on the Chainmail patterns and came up with 2 Repeating patterns that i made into a long “sheet” that i then draped on the Mannequin and removed, added and connected the rings to the fabric.
after covering the Rings in plastic i spray dyed the main body with textile paint giving it a subtle gradient going From dark blueish Purple at the bottom to the fabrics natural color at the top.
When the top was Finished i made a Brooch out of a Plastic lilly leftover dye and a silver fabric. Which gave the front more life.
